Gates' view about Modern IT Classroom

  • Networks – It is true that the network has been used to enhance communication in education for teachers, between teachers and students, and also between teachers and parents. Some primary school or middle school teachers have been using internet, blogs for example, to communicate with the parents about the development of the students. In college it’s oftener used between teachers when they exchange information or work on lesson plans, etc. Besides it is also popular for teachers to communicate with students with the aid of internet, which can make both feel more comfortable to expose their minds to each other.
  • Classroom environment – What Gates describes here has also become possible in China, especially in some innovative schools. However, together with the convenience and fun comes the high requirement for multiroles of the teachers. They have to function as the facilitators, discipliners, in addition to the knowledge imparters.
  • Digital white board – As far as I know this still remains a dream to save labor for the teachers. Now usually we combine the use of blackboard/white board and the computer projector. They can not be integrated into one entity yet. I wish we can have access to such convenient device in the near future.
  • Multimedia – This has largely been realized in the classrooms in China. A lot of teachers and students benefit from it. Gates’ dream has come true partly, partly owing to his very genius. I admire his imagination, and hard work. Have a dream, then work for it!

Dear Jessica, I quite agree with you on what you said about our teacching environment improved by IT technology. And I am also very impressed by and interested in the marvelous digital whiteboard. I think it is much more than labor-saving. This device will bring great changes to our classroom and to our ways of teaching.

Yes, how imaginative Bill Gates is!The marvelous network and new inventions have revolutionized our classrooms. We were shocked and could not help gasping at the smartboard last week! (Seeing is believing. Never thought of another function of my fingers as a mouse, though.) Modern technology is developing far beyond our imagination. Students today are lucky. As instructors, we'll apply whatever we can use of IT into our course.
